Mumma Loves: Style Your Home with Blume Flower School

Confession time: When I was in Year 12, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I finished school. So I dreamt about becoming a Florist. I got to the stage of looking up a course at a flower school and dreaming of flower shops to work in, until events took me down a different path. I ended up working with children (which I absolutely LOVE). However there has always been a part of me that has loved flowers – their colour, their smell, their style, their artistic arrangements. I think a part of me always felt one day I might end up back at that dream of being a florist.

Fast-forward 11 years and a chance encounter. I met Kerstin through a Facebook Group (as a lot of my blogging meetings begin), and she was looking for a Sydney blogger to cover one of her flower workshops. Cue the sound of me pushing past everyone – HA! Just kidding. But you can imagine my excitement at the prospect of sharing this amazing workshop with my mum followers. Was it all just about fulfilling a childhood dream? Not quite.

(I attended the “Style Your Home with Lush Foliage, Florals, Succulents & More” Workshop for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own).

Self-care as a new mum

In the lead up to the workshop, Starfish and I got super sick for a week. I stopped working and spent 4 days straight either on the couch or in bed (with Starfish closely nearby). It was awful, and I was exhausted. I was then stressed because I had work piling up, I hadn’t socialised in a week and Starfish and I were going stir-crazy. I was feeling sorry for myself and throwing constant pity-parties. I wanted some time for me, just to feel like myself again. Away from sick, fussy, crying babies and giving my space to breathe. The Floral Arrangement workshop was the perfect solution to that, but I’ll get to that more in a minute. First, let me tell you how amazing it really was!

Blume Flower School Workshop: Location

The Blume Flower School workshop was held in a trendy little area (Precinct 75) in the Sydney South region. A cluster of workshops and factory buildings, there were many artisan shops and spaces around the area making for an experience in itself. As I’m not familiar with the area or this kind of scene, it already felt like a getaway just being in Precinct 75.

The actual Art Room Workshop-Suite was a gorgeous little studio filled with art materials, décor and even a little kitchenette (perfect for making cups of tea throughout the day). It definitely had an artistic vibe to it, helping to get the creative juices pumping. It was the perfect size for our cozy workshop.

Lush Foliage, Florals, Succulents + More!

Kerstin’s workshop was the perfect blend of a warm, friendly delivery with professional, expert guidance in how to arrange foliage and florals. We had a lot of fun experimenting with and exploring the foliage, and Kerstin’s experience really shone through as she shared with us tips and tricks to help with our arrangements.

We had the opportunity to explore many different materials, such as the Oasis foam used by florists in keeping arrangements together, glass jars and lids, vases, and everyday foliage such as bark and grass. By the end of the workshop, we had 4 different arrangements to take home and brighten up our spaces.

Benefits of the Workshop

By the end of the workshop, not only did we have a variety of beautiful floral arrangements to take home, but we were equipped with new knowledge and skills to continue practising at home. I really left the workshop with more of an interest in flower arranging (I think I WILL one day get to be a florist!!), and am already eager to attend more Blume Flower School workshops looking at other aspects of flower arranging. Plus I have more confidence in being able to keep my home looking gorgeous with some simple foliage and flowers that will look stunning.

Ultimately for me, though, the workshop was not just about the wonderful feeling and aesthetics of floristry (although that was a large part of it). I was able to take some time to relax and unwind, and spend some quality time for myself. As a new mum, this is such a hard task to achieve. I got to do something that was soothing and enjoyable, and create something that would last for a long time (as the foliage we used will last!). I got to explore my own interests for a day, and come out with more of a passion for it.
