Mindfulness and Affirmations as a New Mum

Motherhood is not easy. That may be a plain old fact to many of you, but it’s true nonetheless. No one can adequately prepare you for this journey before you undertake it, and it brings a whole new meaning to “learning on the job”. Motherhood comes with tough days, fun days, hard days, happy days, sad days, cheerful days and rough days. Do you know what kind of day it doesn’t come with? A day OFF. Motherhood is a constant, and it is a real eye-opener once you are on the journey.

For some mums, they can get into the groove of motherhood relatively quickly. For others, it might take a bit of time before they eventually get into the swing of things. Whatever journey a mother takes, it takes concerted effort, and is often draining, exhausting and thankless. As a new mum myself, I have tried to be open about my own journey and the struggle I had with anxiety early on. It took me a little longer than others to get into it.

However, what got me through was the encouragement and support of my mum friends, and finding the balance to give myself some “me” time (to pull me out of the never-ending vortex of feeding, nappy changes and sleep deprivation!). I wish I had learnt earlier the importance of balance and mindfulness as a new mum – finding time, even if it was 5 minutes a day, to just sit, relax and take a breath. If only there was a resource I could have used to help prompt me. Luckily, there is.

I came across the amazing Sarah in a Facebook Group (yes this is how I meet a lot of my new mum friends!) and was instantly drawn to her kind, creative nature. When I saw that she sells her own adult colouring books, I had to have a sticky beak at her designs. I was blown away! Not only did she have a range of gorgeous patterns and beautiful illustrations, but she had MEANINGFUL designs.

We all know how vastly popular adult colouring has become – most adults just enjoy colouring (Um, hello, who doesn’t??). But for many, it has also become a part of their mindfulness routine. What do I mean by that? It is a way for an individual to concentrate solely on the task of colouring, to the point where it becomes almost automated with no other thinking involved. The practice of mindfulness is helpful for individuals to relax, stress-less and unwind. Particularly for new mothers, this is a much needed practice that can help them to cope with the demands of their new lives and routines (or lack thereof). Even a few minutes of mindfulness a day can make a huge impact.

Not only has Sarah utilised adult colouring as a way to promote mindfulness, but she has also used it as a medium to provide support to new mothers in their journey. As a mother who also went through anxiety and some traumatic circumstances surrounding her son’s birth (read more in my interview with her here), Sarah knows the power of encouraging words to a new mum. What I love about her colouring book – besides the simply STUNNING designs – is that she has incorporated a variety of phrases and affirmations to keep mums going. Her encouragements range from “I am a good mother”, “It’s ok if I don’t feel ok”, and “If I’m out of my pajamas by noon, it’s a great day” (a personal favourite!).

This amazing colouring book comes in both a printable eBook format and paperback, depending on your preference. What I love about the digital version is that you can print out the pages you want, as you want them (not wasting paper), and they are so large and easy to colour in. With other colouring books I’ve had (which have been half the size of the U.S. “Letter” prints (8.5 x 11 inches) I can get from Sarah’s book), I found it hard to completely colour the images due to the design of the book – I couldn’t actually colour in the design close to the spine of the book because it wouldn’t open that far. How terribly frustrating! However, with the digital copy, I have ample space to colour the complete design, and I also have options of where to put it when I’m done.

I love the idea of putting the affirmations in an A4 photo frame to display somewhere prominent for you, to remind you of the encouragements when you need it. As you can see, I’ve put mine on my bedside table so it is the first thing I see in the morning, and the last thing I see at night.

Stamp of Approval – Highly Recommended 

Sarah’s A Year of Coloring Affirmations for New Mothers is another product that I not only give my Stamp of Approval for, but I Highly Recommend. It is something that benefits mothers in so many ways – particularly their mental health, which I am a huge advocate for. The designs are gorgeous, and the affirmations are spot on for what new mothers need to read, see and hear.

P.S. Sarah has also released a pocket sized version of “A Year of Coloring Affirmations for New Mothers”. It only has 30 of the 52 affirmations and she has removed any that reference babies – so it’s actually intended to appeal to ALL mums, not just new mums.
